is an ancient town with great significance in the Buddhist tradition. It is believed to be the site where Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana after his death. The history of Kushinagar dates back to the pre-Buddha period and it was the capital of the Malla republic, one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas in the 6th century BCE. Today, visitors to Kushinagar can explore various stupas and temples that mark the historical and spiritual legacy of the place, including the Ramabhar Stupa, which is said to be built over a portion of the Buddha's ashes. SARNATH
